Emotional Intelligence (EQ, or EI) refers to..

..the ability to recognise, understand, manage, and influence one’s own emotions and the emotions of others.

At Latitude45 we build on that by introducing Conscious Competence in to the equation. This introduces knowledge, abilities and skills (competencies) in to the range of attributes to be able to identify, and manage – both in oneself and in others.

Adding these attributes makes it even more of a critical skill for personal and professional success, as it helps individuals manage their personal and professional development, navigate social interactions, make reasoned decisions, and build meaningful relationships.

It is the bedrock for personal, leadership and team development.

In this sense there are four key components of emotional intelligence:

1. Self-awareness: Recognising and understanding your own emotions, strengths, weaknesses, and triggers. Self-awareness allows individuals to understand how their feelings and abilities impact their behaviour and interactions.

2. Self-regulation: The ability to regulate emotions and manage strengths and limitations to get the best outcome from yourself in any situation. Self-regulation helps individuals stay calm and focused in stressful situations, making them less reactive and more thoughtful in their responses.

3. Social-awareness (Empathy): The ability to recognise and understand the strengths, limitations, and emotions of others. Empathy allows individuals to relate to others’ feelings and competencies, which promotes compassion and strengthens communication and understanding in relationships.

4. Social-regulation (Social skills): Building on the ability to identify attributes in others, this is the ability to manage people’s competencies and relationships, communicate effectively, and build strong networks. People with strong social-regulation are skilled at resolving conflicts, collaborating, motivating and influencing others in positive ways to get the best outcome from a team in any situation.

Emotional intelligence is so important because it enables individuals to work effectively with others, make better decisions, manage pressure, and foster healthy relationships. High EQ leads to greater success in leadership, teamwork, and personal well-being.

At latitude45 we believe adventure-based settings are perfect for building Emotional Intelligence. By pushing their comfort zone participants can build the awareness that allows them to address perceptions of their abilities, and see it in others.

In doing so they learn the impact of competency and emotion in getting the best out of themselves and others in any given situation, making it equally beneficial for personal and team environments.
